Providing the Fastest Transmission Speed in the World
The Government of South Korea has started offering super high-speed internet services for the entire country that will allow universal and easy access to online data. “High-speed internet has been designated as a universal service that everyone is entitled to receive no matter where they are,” the Ministry of Science and ICT said.
KT Corp, the country’s top fixed-line operator has been given the task of providing infrastructure in remote places that have not benefited from the coverage in the past. This decision has made South Korea the eighth country in the world to offer universal high-speed internet for all citizens; however the transmission speed of 100 Megabit per second (100 Mbps) which is by far the fastest in the world. The other seven countries which have introduced the universal service are the US, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Malta, Croatia, and Sweden. The average transmission speed for the US is 10 Mbps while the same for other countries is 1-2 Mbps.
Overcoming the Dead Zone Issue
South Korea ranks No.1 among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in terms of fiber optic cable internet connectivity penetration. It is also Asia’s fourth-largest economy. South Korea largely suffers from dead zones. Dead zones are the zones where there are no or restricted services. They are present in rural and fishing communities as well as in isolated homes in mountainous regions.
There are 880,000 older buildings in South Korea that do not have the necessary high-speed internet infrastructure. This decision is expected to solve the internet dead spot issue. The data divide issue that existed between people with availability to the latest internet infrastructure and those without will also come to an end after the Universal high-speed internet service.
