20, 000 roof-mounted solar panels by June 2020
Singapore Airlines and SIA Engineering Company have signed a business deal with Sembcrop Solar. This deal will help the company to install and use around 20, 000 roof-mounted solar panels. These panels will be used to electrify the job locations in different places. And the excess power that will be generated could be transferred to Singapore and Changi Airport Group’s electric grid.
The facilities that are chosen for this project are SIA’s Airline House, SIA Training Centre, TechSQ, five of SIAEC’s hangers and its Engine Test Facility. The new solar installation will have the 8.2-megawatt capacity. It will be the biggest integrated solar power energy project for the industry of aviation in Singapore.
The timeline set for the completion of the project is June 2020. The new power station is estimated to produce around 10,200-megawatt-hours of power per year. The power will be more than enough to light 2,290 flats for all year long. This will offset 4.3 million kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Sustainability is a key focus area for the SIA
The company said this move is to reduce the energy consumption rate by 15% along with a carbon footprint. Lee Wen Fen, SVP of Corporate Planning at SIA said, “Sustainability is a key focus area for the SIA Group. We have been increasing our use of renewable energy sources, and this is one example of how we will continue to invest in the technologies and resources to meet our sustainability goals.”
Ivan Neo, EVP of SIAEC said, “SIAEC is pleased to partner SIA and Sembcrop. Tapping on solar energy to power our offices and hangars is a natural extension of our environmental protection efforts.”
