Key Highlights:
- The initiative aims to start with a coalition of the willing, leading to mutual benefit from the transfer of solar electricity
- The campaign aims to accelerate the shift from coal to clean sources of power
- The initiative will bring together an international coalition of national governments, financial organizations, and power system operators
International Solar Alliance Partnership
India and the UK have collaborated to launch a new Green Grids Initiative enhancing their International Solar Alliance partnership. The new Global Green Grids initiative–One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG) will soon be launched at COP26. It is an evolution of ISA’s OSOWOG multilateral drive to foster interconnected solar energy infrastructure at a global scale. ISA is an inter-governmental treaty-based international organization with a global mandate to catalyze global solar growth by helping to reduce the cost of financing and technology for solar energy.
Green Energy Initiative
The Green Grid initiative will not only change clean energy access but also lower the costs of solar electricity around the World. This will accelerate the construction of new infrastructure needed to deliver a massive scale-up of secure, reliable, and affordable power including modern, flexible grids, charging points, and electricity interconnectors. The main aim of the Green Grids initiative is to help achieve the pace and scale of reforms to infrastructure and market structures required to underpin the global energy transition. Apart from bringing down prices for solar water pumps, the ISA is also enabling technological transfer, storage solutions, and financial assistance along with skilling and enabling countries to adopt solar technology.
The Green Grids initiative will be implemented by focusing on three aspects–
- Engaging leaders of key countries to raise the profile of the role of grids in decarbonization and the need to accelerate action and cooperation.
- Focusing on the major working population to help accelerate the myriad of existing global, regional, and national initiatives on grids, further ensuring successful implementation of clean energy transition and energy access agendas.
- Accelerating R&D cooperation in green grids supporting new ways of exchanging knowledge and experience.
