India known as the ‘pharmacy of the world’ is supplying its locally produced COVID-19 vaccine to several low and middle-income countries. According to the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, the country’s firms are producing vaccines. These vaccines will be exported mainly to developing countries.
The AstraZeneca vaccine, made by the Serum Institute of India brands the shot as Covishield. This is the only authorized vaccine by India as of now. The neighboring countries which will be receiving the vaccines are Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and Seychelles. Whereas, the countries—Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Mauritius are eagerly awaiting the regulatory clearances required to receive the vaccines.
India began its vaccination drive on 16th January whereas some of the other countries began the emergency usage of the vaccines back in December.
Some of the countries that began their COVID-19 vaccine campaign are as mentioned below:
Germany:
Germany has officially started its COVID-19 vaccine roll-out a few days back. Approximately, 150,000 doses of the vaccine developed by BioNTech-Pfizer have arrived in the country. These have been already distributed to nearly 400 vaccination centers.
France:
France is expecting its deliveries by January 25th. After which the inoculation drive will be initiated in the country. The country is also expecting the vaccines manufactured by the BioNTech-Pfizer institute.
Belgium and Latvia:
These two countries have recently embarked on the vaccination process. A resident of a home for the elderly aged 101 was the first to receive the COVID-19 shot in Belgium. Meanwhile in Latvia, the healthcare officials were first in line to receive the BioNTech-Pfizer jab.
Switzerland and Serbia:
Switzerland approved the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine and launched its vaccination drive on December 23rd. Whereas Serbia decided to initiate the drive on Christmas Eve.
Iceland:
After the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccines, Iceland started the vaccination drive the next day on an immediate basis.
Turkey:
After obtaining the first shipment of Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine from China, Turkey began its inoculation drive on 11th December. Turkey is also known to procure 4.5 million doses of the BioNTech-Pfizer version.
America:
The US launched its campaign on the 14th of December. More than 1 million Americans have been vaccinated since the commencement of the vaccination drive. In addition to the BioNTech-Pfizer jab, America has approved the vaccine developed by Moderna.
Canada:
The vaccination drive in Canada began on December 14th. By the end of January, the country is expected to attain 1.2 million doses from BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna.
