One can only wonder what Charles Fey, the inventor of the first-ever slot machine as we know it would say.
Fey’s 1895 invention, The Liberty Bell, was a cast iron machine requiring two men to manoeuvre it into position. About a hundred years after Fey’s slot machine hit the market, Nokia put a simple game on their 6110 model, Snake.
This was the first truly mobile game that became a phenomenon, yet it’s also incredibly crude by our modern standards. Things changed a decade after that when the iPhone raised the stakes again with a touchscreen, camera, speakers and, most spectacularly, no buttons.
If anyone can remember the Blackberry (with buttons) vs. iPhone debacle, the outright winner won as soon as it left the blocks. And here we are in 2023 walking around with the equivalent of 2,000 casinos in our pockets.
Or not, it’s up to us if we want to go online and hit up a casino and play. It’s not as if your phone is automatically required to play slingo slots, poker, blackjack, or whatever floats your boat.
For that reason, you might want to follow our top mobile slot gaming tips to get the best out of your smartphone for games. Firstly, most modern phones can be tweaked to get the best out of them -we’ll get onto that later. But if you really want to hit the ground running, you’ll need aAsus ROG Phone 7.
A what?
Yep, it’s the best mobile device you can get for gaming in 2023 according to unbiased and independent reviews. The Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro comes highly recommended too, as does the budget Poco X5 Pro 5G.
Okay, many readers will be unfamiliar with gaming phones. But just as many will know these three devices have been specially manufactured to meet online gaming requirements.
They’re designed specifically for one thing, games. The phone and other applications the rest of us expect on our smartphones play second fiddle to their real purpose.
But there are compromises, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold rated well, as did the iPhone 14 Pro Max. These are the best of both world devices currently out there, but don’t chuck away your trusty iPhone 11 or Galaxy S20 just yet.
There are a few things you can do to improve your mobile gaming experience. Just ensure you have enough memory, at least 16 GB, or you’ll struggle…
1. Settings
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all fiddle. Different settings are required depending on the types of mobile games you’re playing and when you’re playing them.
For example, you’d have thought if you were playing a slot game set during the night or in space, you’d be wanting to crank up the brightness. Well, no, not necessarily.
Sure, if you’re playing on a sunny day then you might need to adjust the levels. But if you’re playing at night and you have got the brightness turned up, you’ll miss out on all those velvety blacks, killing the atmosphere.
2. Sound
Easy one this. Use headphones.
You’ll lose so much of the depth of a game by not having the sound pumped directly into your ears. I mean, what’s the point of all these game developers gifting you with 3D sound if you’re just going to play through a couple of tiny, tinny tin cans?
There are only a few games that are fine without sound, maybe a couple of online card games for example, but even then, headphones make for better concentration. Also, a good pair of headphones can do wonders for the sound on older smartphones, so, headphones, okay?
3. Do not Disturb
Playing games, any type you care to mention requires concentration. So, the last thing you need is your best friend busting into your private space just as you’re getting ready to spin some preferred reels.
In fact, Do Not Disturb is also good for all games that require your full attention. But especially when it means the difference between winning or losing the jackpot on the slots, so think on…
On a final note, it’s worth bearing in mind that playing mobile slots requires you to exercise a certain degree of caution. Probably a good idea to sort the financial side of things out in the privacy of the home, rather than trying to read out the long card number on the bus at rush hour.
As for Charles Fey, will never know what he would have made of all of this, he passed in 1944. Almost 30 years later, the first fully electronic slot machine went on sale and over 30 years after that, the first iPhone.
One wonders where we will be 30 years from now, but at least you know what to do in the meantime.
