Commitment to Women’s Football
The Australian Football League (AFL) is Australia’s most prestigious and only completely professional men’s football tournament. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also functions as the sport’s overseeing body and is responsible for enforcing the game’s rules. The AFL was originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL). It was established in 1896 as a breakaway league from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with the first season starting the following year. The VFL, with the intention of becoming a national league, began growing beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s. In 1990, it modified its name to the AFL.
Recently, AFL has announced the launch of workplay, a new leading career and networking platform for female athletes in sport and business. This platform serves to promote women’s football at all levels and gives female athletes another way to pursue their goals on and off the field.
The AFL General Manager of Women’s Football, Nicole Livingstone, said the new online platform bolstered the league’s commitment to women’s sport. He mentions, “The AFL is dedicated to investing in the long-term development of women’s sport. We understand the juggle a lot of full-time women athletes endure. And we believe that workplay will help remove the restrictions that can stifle the growth of women’s sport and an athlete’s personal development off the field.”
Empowering AFLW Players
Workplay is an industry-first platform for women’s sport in Australia. It has been designed to provide a community for female athletes to combine with like-minded organizations and global industry leaders that can help them advance their careers off the field. Workplay connects AFLW players to a variety of flexible employment, education, and career advancement possibilities that include full-time sporting commitments while also inspiring more women to pursue their passions both on and off the field.
In addition, workplay offers a variety of content and resources to assist AFLW players at every stage of their careers and enables them to explore new possibilities across a wide range of industries. The online platform is available to all AFLW players with the purpose of increasing workplay to women athletes of all sporting codes.
