multinational companies

What Indian leaders should learn from the multinational companies?

The success of any organization or business mainly depends on the team of its employees. It is the result of their passion, commitment, loyalty and eagerness towards work. A famous author of business management books, Patrick Lencioni has righteously quoted, “Enthusiastic, and loyal employees are pivotal drivers of growth and health in any organization.”

There are all kinds of companies right from startups with a small group of team members to multinational companies with thousands of employees. Each company follows a different type of work culture. Some employers keep a strict eye on every activity of their staff, whereas others demand complete silence and authoritative decorum. There also exist some companies that believe in a work culture where they grant complete freedom to the employees in exchange for quality-oriented work.

Rapid development and boon in the information technology (IT) sector have also influenced the Indian working culture. A developing country like India, which previously sustained on agriculture for its livelihood is quickly changing gears and building its economy on the flourishing IT setups. But there are certain loopholes and inadequacies in the Indian working culture which is making our employees eager to work aboard. Companies such as Google, Microsoft, American Express have centers in India and yet they seem to grow and prosper better. What makes them different than us?

  1. Proper Infrastructure

Right from the sitting arrangements to updated computer systems, it is the duty of the company to provide appropriate working tools. Malfunctioning hardware and old setups hinder the working pattern and create continuous distractions for the employees.

Financial provisions must be made towards the proper layout of the workplace. Every month, all the computer systems, security for generating data and required applications should be updated. The required paid versions can be purchased one by one. These services are a must for an employee to work efficiently. It is a small prize in exchange for quality work.

  1. One-On-One Communication

The progress of an employee is directly proportional to the form of instructions and communications made by the employer. It becomes the duty of the head to guide and instruct the member to provide standard work. Every task should be ordered as per the priority of its completion and handed over to the employee.

It is the trait of the leader to communicate the importance and seriousness of a particular work. This does not mean that the application should be of military discipline, but must be in the form of a calm, relaxed and friendly attitude during meetings and discussions. There must be scheduled days where each employee is given undivided attention and his/her difficulties are solved. This makes the manpower of the company to devote 100% time, loyalty and involvement towards work.

  1. Provision Of Proper Guidance And Instructions

It is important for the freshers to get correct guidance and instructions from the beginning. It can begin from staff interactions to work orientation programs. One cannot leave the beginner on its own and expect greater results in return. It is the duty of the management to impart training sessions given by its best members to conduct sessions like trouble shootings, prioritizing tasks and completing them before the deadlines.

This will introduce the freshers with a know-how of the type of work allotted to them. This input from the management will increase the productivity and efficiency of the members.

  1. Troubleshooting With The Employees

The difficulties faced while completing the allotted tasks are many. Every person has a different angle of facing and solving problems. Troubleshooting sessions can be conducted by the head twice a week to tackle problems with the team.

These sessions will yield better results and given tasks will be completed within the deadline.

  1. Man Is A Social Animal

It is important that we adopt this social work culture. Instead of conducting meetings in the same boardrooms, they can be planned outside the work environment. The human brain refuses to function after some time and requires a healthy dose of positive energy. Once in a while, a dinner or lunch date with the employees is a must.

The more a person interacts and communicates with others, there is a better scope of his forming social relationships and bonding with the colleagues.

  1. Lending A Hand

During a team project, if a member is struggling with a task, then it becomes the duty of other members and project heads to lend support and help. This creates a balanced work environment.

Nowadays, people have become highly competitive and are ready to pull others behind in order to move ahead.  Even though the competition is healthy, it should be evaluated versus own performance. The focus has to be on personal growth. Help and support should be provided to all members at times of difficulties to increase the productivity of the work.

  1. Appreciation

Companies expect the devotion of more than 12 hours of work from its employees. However, in return, multinational companies have started offering incentives in the form of gift vouchers, movie tickets, free vacation according to the fulfillment of targets.

Along with this, companies have also started rewarding employees according to their monthly performance. The aim is to appreciate the work completed by an individual in front of the team. This becomes a motivating factor for others to follow the suit. It is not a matter of the amount or size of gifts and incentives, but the appreciation and recognition received from the employer.

Promotions are again a way of moving the person higher in the hierarchy as per his/her performance and experience. It must be based solely on quality work, efficiency and performance without any bias.

The above-mentioned pointers are being followed by all the multinational companies. India, being a bit reserved and conservative in its approaches is lacking these traits. Employees are ready to work aboard since a healthy work environment is provided to them along with freedom of thought. The more boundaries and restrictions erected for the members, the more they want to break free and fly.

Indian leaders and founders should be ready to loosen their pocket strings and contribute towards the upliftment of their employees. Follow the success mantra, ‘Be ready to provide things if you want better results.’
